Where I’m Volunteering

Here are some of the organizations with whom I have volunteered since 2012:

  • AGE Computer Lab
Austin Groups for the Elderly has a Computer Lab in their building, which is run by volunteers.  I try to help out any way I can.  Currently, I am their Social Media Director and a substitute registrar.  I have also done individual tutoring and classroom coaching.  I’ve been volunteering with them since 2011.  Check out the AGE Computer Lab Facebook Page.
  • Breast Cancer Resource Center
I had been aware of the BCRC’s “Art Bra Austin” event for a couple years, but this year I actually volunteered.  As the daughter of a breast cancer survivor and the cousin of someone currently receiving treatment for very aggressive breast cancer, I have been devoted to breast cancer-related causes for decades.  Art Bra Austin is a fun, creative, and exciting annual fundraising event.  This year I helped out by organizing photos of the art bras, painting some of the event furniture, and helping on day-of setup.  Even though it just took place, we are getting together in August to assign team lead roles to those people who would like to step up and lead a team of volunteers for next year’s event.  I look forward to taking on a team lead role and helping continue to make this event even more successful than it was this year.
  • Williams College
As a proud alumna of Williams College, I have volunteered with the alumni organization in a number of different ways.  Since 2007, I have been the Austin Alumni Association President.  n 2013, I was asked to join the Executive Committee for the Society of Alumni.  Involvement in this group is by nomination only and is based on your engagement levels as an alumna/us.  I am very honored to be a member of the Committee.
  • Junior League of Austin
From 2007-2009, I was a member of the Junior League.  My time in their ranks afforded me the opportunity to volunteer with a number of organizations including Caritas and Austin Habitat for Humanity.  While I am no longer a member of the League, I still participate in their annual event Coats for Kids.  Every year I volunteer on “Distribution Day” (when members of the community come to pick out their coats).  There is nothing quite like helping a family pick out winter coats and watching the kids’ eyes light up when they find the one they’ve been looking for.
  • Karma Badgers
In 2013, a friend of mine started a volunteer group called the Karma Badgers.  This group takes on ad-hoc volunteering opportunities.  Through this group, I have repainted the Emancipet offices and helped improve a park in East Austin as part of “It’s my Park Day.”
  • Leadership Austin
I completed the Emerge class in 2008 and have been volunteering with Leadership Austin ever since.  I served as a class representative from 2011-2012 and most recently volunteered in a variety of capacities at their Best Party Ever annual fundraiser.  In previous years, I have volunteered as event personnel for fundraising events and training workshops.
  • Capital Area Food Bank
I first learned about the Capital Area Food Bank through my work at AMD.  We had a group volunteering event, and it was great fun.  Not only was it an enjoyable time, but we made an impressive impact by boxing thousands of pounds of food to be distributed to people in need.  I have since volunteered as part of work groups and as an individual.  It’s amazing to see the immediate difference you are making after a half- or full-day shift.
